COURSE INFORMATION

STANDARD GRADE

Most people can identify with many aspects of the Standard Grade Biology course: environmental awareness (including ecology and some effects of pollution), how the human body works, and the production of foods (eg cheese), drinks (eg wine and beer), and drugs (eg antibiotics). The course is wide ranging in content and provides a comprehensive introduction to traditional and modern biology.

Seven major topics are covered:
  1. The Biosphere - ecology.
  2. The World of Plants - anatomy, physiology, agriculture.
  3. Animal Survival - digestion, waste, reproduction.
  4. Investigating Cells - cell division, diffusion, respiration, enzymes.
  5. The Body in Action - movement, heart and lungs, brain.
  6. Inheritance - variation, genetic selection.
  7. Biotechnology - food production, waste disposal, genetic engineering.
The course is available at both General and Credit levels and the work involves reading, writing, experiments, investigations, videos, discussions, and the use of numerous models and microscope slides.

Assessment of three elements is carried out :
  1. Knowledge and Understanding (in the final examination)
  2. Problem Solving (in the final examination)
  3. Practical Abilities (during the course, in school)

HIGHER

Purpose

To contribute to the student’s general and vocational education through the acquisition of relevant biological knowledge and skills, and to provide a general basis for further study or employment in areas related to biology. The course provides a broad-based, integrated study of a wide range of biological topics emphasising the importance of biology as an area of fundamental investigative science and as a basis of study in a wide range of applied fields. The course develops an understanding of the way in which biological principles can be applied to the issues facing the individual and society and fosters positive attitudes to others and the environment.

Recommended Entry

While entry is at the discretion of the school, students would normally be expected to have attained an award in Standard Grade Biology with Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving at Grade 1 or 2 or Biology Intermediate 2 at C pass or above.

Course Details

The course has three 40 hour units and as with all courses includes a further 40 hours for induction, extending the range of learning and teaching approaches, remediation, consolidation, integration of learning and preparation for external assessment. This time is an essential element of the course and advice on the use of the overall 160 hours is included in the course details.

Unit - Title, Length and Brief Description

Cell Biology (H) 40 hours
Cell structure in relation to function, photosynthesis, energy release, synthesis and release of proteins, cellular response in defence in animals and plants.

Genetics and Adaptation (H) 40 hours
Variation, selection and speciation, animal and plant adaptations.

Control and Regulation (H) 40 hours
The control of growth and development, physiological homeostasis, population dynamics.

Progression
  • Students who achieve Higher Biology may progress to:
  • Advanced Higher Biology
  • Higher Managing Environmental Resources and other specialist Biology Highers
  • Units at Advanced Higher in Biology
  • HNC, HND or degree level study in Biological Sciences and Medicine, Nursing,
  • Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Radiography, Chiropody
  • Other further and higher education opportunities using the award for general or specialist entry purposes
  • A range of employment or training opportunities
The course or its component units may also form part of one or more Scottish Group Awards.

Assessment

To pass Higher Biology you must:

1. Pass one written assessment at the end of each of the three units
2. Pass one written assessment on practical work in which you have been engaged in one of the three units.
3. Pass the final written exam which will be 2.5 hours long with a total of 130 marks:

  • Section A – 30 multiple choice questions of KU, PS and practical ability (30 marks)
  • Section B – structured questions on KU, PS and practical ability (80 marks)
  • Section C – two extended response (essay) questions from a choice of four (20 marks)

INTERMEDIATE 2

Purpose

The course provides a broad based integrated study of the range of biological topics required for progression to the study of Higher Biology or Higher Human Biology as well as areas of employment. The course develops an understanding of the way in which biological principles can be applied to the issues facing the individual and society. The study of this course contributes to the candidate’s general and vocational education through the acquisition of biological knowledge and skills, and to the development of more general attitudes and abilities related to scientific processes.
