S3/S4: STANDARD GRADE COMPUTING Why Standard Grade Computing? Computers and related technologies play an increasingly important part in most aspects of everyday life and work. The Standard Grade Computing course is useful for all pupils (Credit, General and Foundation), and has recently been revised to keep up to date with current technologies. Course Outline Pupils will use modern PCs which are networked and have Internet access. Topics in the course include: Computer systems, word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software and multimedia, DTP, web page creation, networks, Internet, email, introduction to programming, use of computers in business, use of robots in factories and in other places. Pupils also do project work which allows them to make interesting use of their practical skills. Assessment Class tests in S3 and S4 are used to assess progress throughout the course. At the end of S4, KU (Knowledge and Understanding) and PS (Problem Solving) grades are determined by performance in the external exam. A grade for PA (Practical Abilities) is determined by the teacher, and is based on projects and tasks done on the computer and assessed in class during S3/S4. An overall grade is awarded based on the KU, PS and PA grades. Progression Pupils achieving a grade 1 or 2 in Standard Grade Computing can consider progressing to Higher Computing. Intermediate 2 Computing is a possible progression for pupils achieving grade 3 or 4. Careers Although this course can be a starting point towards the many different careers in the Computing industry, it also provides pupils with valuable IT knowledge and skills which nowadays are necessary in a wide variety of other jobs and careers.
