CRAFT & DESIGN

Why Standard Grade Craft & Design?

A course in Craft & Design will help you develop creative, practical, vocational and organisational skills which you can use in a wide range of careers.  This course provides life long skills which will be useful for home improvement and DIY.  The design aspect allows you to be creative and innovative and you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of tools and materials.

Course Outline

There are three areas of study:

Design – you will analyse given problems, draw a specification and design a variety of solutions to solve problems.  This includes the use of computer aided drawing and design.

Practical Abilities – you will develop craftsmanship in woodcraft, metalcraft and plastic work.

Knowledge and Understanding – of related tools, materials and processes.

Assessment

Standard Grade Craft & Design is assessed at Foundation, General and Credit levels.  Knowledge and Understanding are assessed by an external exam set and marked by the SQA.  Designing and Practical Abilities are continuously assessed by your teacher in school and may be moderated by SQA.

Progression

Successful completion of the course will normally lead to study at the following levels. A pass at:

Foundation level: Intermediate 1 Practical Craft Skills
General level: Intermediate 2 Practical Craft Skills or Product Design
Credit level: Higher Product Design

Careers

Possible careers include: Art & Design, Carpentry, Construction, Engineering, Joinery, Manufacturing Industries and Product Design.

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

Why Standard Grade Graphic Communication?
 
Every day we are surrounded by graphical images of all types, each giving us different kinds of messages and information.  They appear in books, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, on television and product packaging.  As the communication of information using images has become essential for all commerce, you will study how to select appropriate methods and media for particular presentation tasks.
 
Course Outline
 
The course develops abilities in reading, interpreting and applying graphic source materials, drafting, sketching, using colour, rendering techniques and computer aided graphics.  It focuses on representing everyday objects through a series of tasks and assignments linked to common themes.
 
Assessment
Standard Grade Graphic Communication is assessed at Foundation, General and Credit levels.  Knowledge and Interpretation and Drawing Abilities are assessed by an external exam, set and marked by the SQA.  Illustration and Practical Skills are continuously assessed by your teacher in school based on folio work and may be moderated by SQA.
 
Progression
 
Successful completion of the course will normally lead to study at the following levels.  A pass at:
 General level:  Intermediate 2 Graphic Communication or
 Intermediate 2 Product Design
 Credit level:  Higher Graphic Communication or
 Higher Product Design

WOODWORKING SKILLS
 
Why Intermediate Woodworking Skills?
This course is particularly useful if you enjoy practical work or are considering a career in the construction industry.  It will contribute to your practical knowledge, understanding and experience of woodcraft.  It is therefore a valuable course if you wish to gain experience and appreciation of wood materials and to develop useful craft skills in a workshop environment.
 
Course Outline
 
The course consists of three units:
Bench Skills 1 – Wood Flat-Frame Construction.  Use a range of common hand tools, make a range of woodworking joints and manufacture a product from a working drawing.
Bench Skills 2 – Wood Carcass Construction.  Select and use woodworking materials for specific purposes, make a range of woodworking joints and manufacture a product from a working drawing.
Machining and Finishing – Wood.  Use common machine tools, use common power tools, use finishing techniques on timber products, with the aid of machine and power tools manufacture a product from a working drawing.
 
Assessment
 
The course assessment is based on a practical project involving the manufacture of an article.  This is internally assessed by the teacher and may be externally moderated by the SQA.
 
Progression
 
Successful completion of the Intermediate 1 course will normally lead to study at Intermediate 2 level.  There is currently no Higher level course available.
 
Careers
 
Possible careers include: Carpentry, Construction and Joinery.
